The sun care call arrives in the third week of April. Sometimes the first week of May. A buyer has watched one warm weekend, looked at an empty facing, and wants forty pieces of a Korean SPF on the shelf before the next bank holiday. Confirm the order, wait for Korean preparation, fly it, clear it, over-label it, put it out: that stock lands in late June at the earliest. The shelf stood empty through the weeks the customer was actually looking, and the goods arrive in time to be marked down in September.
That call was placed against the selling season. The supply chain runs on the Korean calendar, and the Korean calendar decides whether you make the peak.
The short version
- Belgian pharmacy and cosmetics retail turnover (Eurostat sts_trtu_m, nine complete years from 2015 to 2025) indexes December at 121 and August at 91 against a year average of 100, so December sells about a third more than August.
- Chuseok closes Korean head offices, forwarders and banks from 24 to 26 September 2026, and Seollal from 6 to 9 February 2027, one holiday each directly in front of the Christmas and the sun care order windows.
- By air from Korea, count nine weeks from cleared payment to a priced shelf and ten if the order crosses a Korean holiday week, so a Christmas shelf on 15 November means wiring in the first ten days of September.
The year has one spike and one hole
Eurostat publishes unadjusted monthly retail turnover for the trade class covering dispensing chemists plus cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (series sts_trtu_m, NACE G47_NF_HLTH, index 2021 = 100). Belgium reports it without a gap from January 2015 to July 2026, which makes it the most usable free European seasonality series for this channel. Take the nine complete non-pandemic years, 2015 to 2019 and 2022 to 2025, and index every month against its own year's average:
- December: 121. The highest month in all nine years, no exceptions.
- June: 104. The highest month outside December in eight of the nine.
- August: 91. The lowest month in all nine years, no exceptions.
- November: 100.5. Flat. No Black Friday lift shows up in this channel at all.
Italy and Spain report the same series for 2022 and 2023 and agree on the shape: December at 118 and 109, August at 82 and 97. All read on 1 September 2026. The class includes pharmacies and medical goods, so a pure cosmetics curve is sharper than this, not flatter.
Three practical consequences. December turns over roughly a third more than August in the same shop. That money arrives in December, not in the November week most buying plans are built around. And the August hole is deep enough that the September shelf is usually a recovery job, not a peak, which is why loading up for back to school is the wrong instinct: you want to be correctly in stock in September, not deep in it. Depth is where the cash dies, and the sizing arithmetic behind that does not change because a season is coming.
Sun care stopped being one season, so one order is no longer enough
Circana, published 22 June 2026: sun care across its EU big six (France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, UK) is worth about EUR 1.6 bn and grew 11.6 % in value over the 52 weeks to 29 March 2026, with units up 8 %. Prestige in-sun SPF across the EU big five grew 20 % in value in the first quarter of 2026, and facial SPF grew 26 %. Q1 is the darkest quarter of the northern European year.
Two different demands now sit inside one category. Facial SPF sells every month and belongs in the standing routine block next to the cleanser and the moisturiser, which is a shelf decision as much as a buying one, and the way you lay that bay out matters more than the season. Body sun care sells inside a window of roughly twelve weeks and needs two orders: one for the opening, one placed while the first is still selling.
The second order is the one almost nobody places. It gets skipped because April felt expensive and nobody wants to hold sunscreen in September. Holding it is the smaller problem. Article 6 of the cosmetics regulation obliges a distributor to check that the minimum durability date has not passed before making a product available, and a sunscreen bought in spring 2027 is still legally sellable in spring 2028. A September markdown is a choice you make with your eyes open. A July stock-out is revenue you never find out about, and it trains the customer to buy her SPF somewhere else, which is the expensive half of what an out-of-stock actually costs.
The two Korean weeks that sit in front of your two biggest orders
Chuseok runs 24 to 26 September 2026 and 14 to 16 September 2027. Seollal runs 6 to 9 February 2027. Both close brand head offices, the distributors your exporter buys from, forwarders and banks at the same time, and the days either side thin out as people travel.
Now look at where they land. The Christmas order has to leave in September. Chuseok is in September. The sun care order has to leave in late January or February. Seollal is in February. The two weeks that stop Korea sit directly in front of the two moments European retail needs Korea to move, and the queue in the week after a holiday is everybody else's order too.
Air is the only sensible mode for a dated peak out of Korea, and its price moves hard. WorldACD's weekly index put Asia Pacific to Europe spot at USD 5.26 per kg in week 26 of 2026 (22 to 28 June) and USD 4.42 per kg in week 34 (17 to 23 August), a 16 % fall in eight weeks, with Korean origin running above the regional average all year (+25 % year on year against +15 % for the region in week 34). Budget from a quote you took this month, never last quarter. Sea from Korea is a bet on a connection: Hapag-Lloyd states one weekly Busan call for the Korean market, and its NE2 rotation effective 5 March 2026 does not call Busan at all, so Korean boxes commonly transship. Nobody publishes a current Busan to North Europe door-to-door transit that we could verify, so ask your forwarder for the vessel name, the transhipment port and the cut-off date in writing and treat anything vaguer as a guess.
The ordering calendar
The planning block, by air, from cleared payment to a priced facing: about one week for the wire to clear and the order to be confirmed, one to four weeks of preparation in Korea because the goods are procured after you order rather than picked from a shelf, about one week for booking, flight and clearance, and two weeks at your end for goods-in, over-labelling into the language of each country you sell in, pricing and merchandising.
Nine weeks from wire to shelf. Ten if the order crosses a Korean holiday week. If a supplier answers "when does it ship" with a range wider than two weeks, that range is your risk and you add it on top.
| Peak | On shelf by | Wire the order by | The week in the way |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas gifting (December, the year's only real spike) | 15 November | first 10 days of September | Chuseok, 24 to 26 Sep 2026 and 14 to 16 Sep 2027 |
| January barrier and repair | 27 December | mid October | 3 and 9 October are both Korean public holidays |
| Sun care, first wave | 30 April | last week of January | Seollal, 6 to 9 Feb 2027, and the backlog behind it |
| Sun care, top-up | 15 June | mid April | none, and this is the order nobody places |
| Autumn barrier care and the September restock | 1 October | mid July | Korean summer vacation, late July into early August |
Two rules that go with the table. Place the sun care first wave before Seollal rather than in the fortnight after it, because that fortnight is when every other buyer in the world is also asking a Korean office that has just reopened. And put the top-up order in the calendar in January, at the same time as the first one, with a note to release it in mid April: an order that only exists as an intention in April never gets sent.
Questions buyers ask
Does Black Friday matter for Korean skincare in Europe?
Not in the pharmacy and cosmetics store channel that Eurostat measures. Across nine complete Belgian years from 2015 to 2025, November indexes at 100.5 against a year average of 100, an ordinary month with no lift in it. Run a promotion if an online shop lives on one, but do not build the buying plan around a November peak the store data does not show. The turnover arrives in December.
Can I still sell sunscreen left over from last summer?
Yes, as long as the date of minimum durability on the pack has not passed, and Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 makes checking that date the distributor's job before the product goes on the shelf. Products with a shelf life over 30 months carry no best-before date at all, only the open-jar symbol with a period after opening, so unopened stock from last spring is normally still sellable. Write the date on the bin location at goods-in, then a markdown in September is a decision taken in advance rather than a surprise found on the shelf.
Is sea freight from Korea worth it for a small shop?
Only for standing routine lines with no date attached, the cleansers and toners that sell every week of the year, and only when the order is large enough that the per-unit freight saving survives the fixed charges for clearance and delivery at the European end. Anything tied to a peak goes by air, because a box that misses its transhipment connection misses the season, and the shelf cannot wait for the next sailing. Get the vessel, the transhipment port and the port cut-off date in writing before paying for the goods, and treat any freight quote older than a month as expired.
