So finden Sie K-Beauty-Marken, die sonst niemand in Ihrer Stadt führt

16 June 2026 · The Glow Trade

A shop owner in a mid-sized city sends us a photo of the competitor's window two streets away. Same snail essence, same rice sunscreen, same heartleaf toner, the same three brands she opened with eight months ago. She wants a brand the other shop does not have, and her instinct is to ask for something brand new. That instinct produces the worst first orders we see: a launch nobody has heard of, in Korean-only packs, at a minimum quantity that takes a year to sell.

The brands that make a shop different are almost never new. They have been selling in Korea for two or three years and have simply not crossed the street yet.

The short version

  • Under Article 19(1) of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 every cosmetic sold in the EU carries the name and address of an EU responsible person, and Article 4 makes the importer that person for imported goods; a brand with no EU pack has no responsible person yet.
  • Hwahae's 2025 awards drew on more than 660,000 Korean consumer reviews written between 1 November 2024 and 31 October 2025, and Hwahae publishes a mid-year and a year-end list, so a Korean product is judged on a cycle of about six months.
  • K-Beauty Expo Korea runs 15 to 17 October 2026 at KINTEX in Goyang, organised by KINTEX with KOTRA, and Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna runs in March 2027 with the perfumery and cosmetics halls open for the first three days; Korean brands looking for a first European distributor book stands at both.

Three kinds of new, and only one of them pays

In Korea a product is judged fast. A product that holds a Hwahae list for two cycles has survived a year of Korean scrutiny; one that appears once and vanishes was a launch.

That gives you three buckets:

  1. New to the world. Launched in the last twelve months, no award history, often no Korean retail listing beyond the brand's own shop. Skip it; you would be paying to run its market test.
  2. New to Europe. Proven in Korea, no EU pack, no responsible person, no distributor. Real differentiation, at a cost covered below.
  3. New to your city. Proven in Korea, EU pack exists, an EU wholesaler carries it, and nobody within your customers' walking radius has ordered it. The cheapest win in the category, and most shops never look for it because they order from the same top-ten list as the shop across the road.

A single shop hunts in bucket three; bucket two needs a second location or an online channel to spread the fixed cost.

Where brands surface, in the order they surface

The sequence we see runs Korean shelf, Korean app, Korean trade fair, European trade fair, European wholesaler catalogue, European chain. Each step is public.

Olive Young's Seoul stores and its English-language global site show what is selling; a permanent shelf position there, rather than a promotional end cap, is the first test. Hwahae's category rankings, in English at hwahae.com, show whether it repurchases; read the category list, because a brand can win with one hero SKU and have nothing behind it.

K-Beauty Expo Korea, 15 to 17 October 2026 in Halls 3 to 5 of KINTEX, is where Korean brands without export distribution meet foreign buyers, and KOTRA co-organises it. Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna, in March 2027 with the perfumery and cosmetics halls open for the first three days, is the same conversation held in Europe; in our experience a brand met there in March is in a wholesaler catalogue by autumn.

For bucket three, watch the last two steps. Your EU wholesaler's new-arrivals page shows what already has an EU pack and a responsible person. Then check the chains: dm, Douglas, Boots and their equivalents publish their ranges online, and a brand they list already has a public price ceiling. Whether anyone near you stocks it takes the brand's store locator, a search of the brand name plus your city, and a walk; the Cosmetic Product Notification Portal has no public search, so it cannot tell you who already sells a product in your country.

What a brand nobody stocks usually costs

Bucket two brands are absent for a reason, and the reason is almost always regulatory rather than commercial.

Article 4 makes the importer the responsible person. Bring in a Korea-only brand and you notify each product on CPNP before sale, keep the product information file, and are the name on the pack when a customer has a reaction. Article 19(5) leaves the label language to each member state, so a Korean-only pack needs an overlabel almost everywhere. Nobody publishes a list price for responsible person services; every quote we have seen scales with SKU count, so get two per-SKU quotes before you fall in love with the brand.

One trap catches retailers who think an EU wholesaler spares them all of this. Under Article 13(3), a distributor who translates any element of the labelling on their own initiative, to sell into a second member state, must notify that product on CPNP themselves. Buy a German-labelled pack and sell it in Germany, and you owe nothing. Sticker it in Italian for your Italian webshop, and you have become a notifier.

Bucket two is also the only situation in this category where asking for territory makes sense: a brand with no European distributor can grant one, a brand already in three wholesaler catalogues cannot, whatever the sales rep says. Read what exclusivity can and cannot mean in K-beauty wholesale before you sign anything with a territory clause.

On the shelf, bring it in narrow, three to six SKUs around the hero product, following depth versus variety when curating a K-beauty section, because the brand has no pull yet and a full catalogue of it is dead stock with a foreign name. And a brand nobody has heard of gets no help from TikTok at the point of sale, so Korean packaging that sells itself off the shelf is the test its pack has to pass.

The screen: six SKUs, twelve weeks

Our rule for an unfamiliar brand: six SKUs at most, and no more units per SKU than you expect to sell in twelve weeks at current footfall. If the supplier's minimum is above that, walk away or split the order with a retailer in another city.

All five lines must be yes before you order.

1. Proven in Korea: on a Hwahae category list or a permanent Olive Young shelf for two cycles (12 months).
2. EU responsible person: name and EU address printed on the pack, or named by the supplier in writing.
3. Pack language: mandatory label elements in a language my market accepts, or a per-SKU overlabel quote in hand (translating it myself triggers Article 13(3)).
4. Absent nearby: brand store locator, brand plus city search, and the national chains' websites all come back empty.
5. Testable: six SKUs and twelve weeks of sales per SKU cover the supplier's minimum.

The email for a wholesaler whose catalogue does not list the brand. Sourcing requests are normal; most wholesalers answer "can you source a specific brand" in their own FAQ, so ask for numbers.

Subject: Sourcing request: [Brand], [3 to 6 SKUs], for [city, country]

Hello [name],

I run [shop type] in [city] and want to add [Brand], which none of the retailers near me carry. I am looking at [SKU 1], [SKU 2], [SKU 3].

Could you confirm in writing:
1. Whether you carry or can source these SKUs, and the minimum per SKU.
2. The unit price per SKU, ex-works or delivered.
3. The responsible person printed on the pack, and the languages on the label.
4. Which countries you currently ship this brand to.
5. Whether a territory or first-refusal arrangement is possible for [country or region], and on what conditions.

A first order would be [n] units per SKU. If the minimum is higher, tell me the number and I will decide.

Thank you,
[name, shop, city]

Point 4 is the one suppliers hedge on. A vague answer means the brand is already in your country.

Questions buyers ask

Can I import a Korean brand directly if no EU wholesaler has it?

Yes, and you become the responsible person under Article 4 of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009: you notify every product on CPNP before sale, hold the product information file, and put your name and EU address on the pack. Each cost is per SKU, so below ten SKUs it usually eats the price difference you hoped to capture.

How do I find out whether a brand is already sold in my country?

Start with the brand's own store locator, then the range pages of your national drugstore and perfumery chains, then a search for the brand name plus your city. CPNP has no public search, so it cannot answer this.

Is a brand that just launched in Korea a good bet?

No. A launch has no repurchase data and no award history, so you would be funding its market test at European prices. Wait until it has survived two Hwahae cycles or held a permanent Olive Young shelf for a year, then buy it while it is still absent from your city.
